I'm new here...also advice on getting new chickens

I've read this thread several times and ponder on how to
answer you.

How many chickens you should have depends a lot on the
size of your coop. How big is your coop? Some recommend
3 square feet per bird, some say 4 feet. I like a bit more.

So...how big is the coop?

Spook

It is approximately 160 square feet...we have 3 in here now so there would be room to add just a few.

THANK YOU EVERYONE for all of your great tips and warm welcomes! This support and community definitely makes all the difference. I will be researching all these suggestions and may be back for more advice. :D

@Alexandra33 The olive eggs are stunning! Wow. I love the array of colors you have in your basket. Thank you!
@Michael OShay This list is very helpful for reliable layers, which is definitely what we are looking for. I really appreciate it!
@Spookwriter it is approximately 160 square feet.
@TBirdsTheWord33 wow, this is incredibly comprehensive and helpful with the breeds, integrating, and chicks vs pullets. Thank you!!

I just wanted to give more specific responses as I was traveling when this thread started to expand!

Hi, I'm also a new member but thought I would throw this out there. In my experience adding new chickens to the flock disrupts the established pecking order and unfortunately is something that has to be reestablished, the older chickens will pick on the new ones but this usually doesn't last that long. My birds free range inside a 4 foot welded wire fence on about an acre I have a small pen inside the fence I add the new guys to so the older birds get used to seeing the new ones without being able to get to them after about a week or so I will slip the new guys into the coop with the older ones after they roost sometimes they don't even notice them.
since you only have a few older birds it shouldn't be to stressful on the new guys.
Good luck with your flock :)
