I'm new here and I am a new chicken mom

Howdy Ya'll ~

I got a four month old Silkie (beautiful show quality)in March and my 3 day old mixed bantum flock (2 Silkies, 3 Mille Fleur D'Uccles, and 3 Frizzles) on April1st. So I am a new mom also.

Mine are house chickens so far. Mom raised chickens a couple of years when I was 12-13. I loved them as much as she did and wanted my own all my life. Now, I am 47 and living in an apartment and decided not to wait any longer.

We long for a better living arrangement, but we do have a small backyard to visit. I am a member of several chicken boards and visit them regularly. I have learned everything from the members.

It seems that the people that enjoy chickens and posting about them are simply delightful. We seem to enjoy being silly, and understand the best times come from sharing time with the girls.

I started reading the boards to research for my Public Speaking Class. I chose to make a speech on the benefits of having chickens. Then all of a sudden - I had chickens living in the apartment.

It couldn't be all my own fault

I am typing this at my desk, where Fancie is ensconced on her placemat, with her diaper on, content to sit between my arms and murmer comments about what we read here.

By the way, my speech was good, and I finished by surprizing the class and my instructor by bringing Fancie out to meet them. The result is that my Professor was sold and is interested in getting his own. So I am an enabler myself, or maybe even a chicken pusher.

Hello everyone, it' s been two weeks since I last posted ( garden tol get in) and I had a lot of fun reading your replies. Everyone is so helpful and supportive. I feel ridiculous typing all of this as I just deleted my whole post just now, but I will retype everything again. That just makes me so mad. Anyway, thanks for all of the great snack suggestions. I have been giving my 3 week olds some wheat (the good kind) bread and an occasional meal worm. They seem to love both, but now I am worried about grit. I am going to the mill store tomorrow and will pick up some then. I would never want to hurt them by trying to be nice. Another question I had was about bedding. I ran out of pine shavings so I have been putting hay (Timothy and "regular") in their pen. They seem to love it and seem to nest in it after scratching and picking in it for about an hour. Will this hurt them? I hope not. If I have one regret about getting these chicks it's that I didn't get a camera at the same time. In just two weeks, they have changed so much. The only part of them that resembles the chick I brought home is their head (and that will soon changed too, I can see the feathers starting!!) They grow so fast. But, they each are so individual and I love them all. They sure are raggedy looking though. Whew, feathers and fluff all mixed up. Two of them seem to be distinctly bigger than the others is that usual? Could they be roosters do ya think? I really hope not. I don't think I'm ready for roosters. Anyway, Hi agian, I hope to be able to post more often. It sure looks like this is a great group of people all of whom love chickens as much as I do. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome to the land of raising chics ---- it will not be what you might be thinking it will be right now, it will be so much more.
