Yes, I'm off to a good start with the whole project of raising chickens.

I thought I'd take a year to build the coop but as opportunity presented itself I got busy and finished my coop/pen and I have 10 good looking RIR pullets and a rooster.

I bought the rooster just for sound effects....and now as I learn to take care of the girls and make them feel safer.

Thanks...Perry

Welcome to BYC, Perry! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Congrats on finishing your coop and run! And also congrats on your flock! RIRs are great chickens. The hens lay lots of eggs and the roosters are very loyal towards their ladies. I hope you are enjoying them! Good luck with your new chicken adventure and welcome to this community.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to write me a welcome note...I do believe I've stumbled upon a good website and I look forward to reading and learning more about chickens.

I'm having a good garden and my flock does enjoy my garden treats...especially cucumbers, tomatoes and corn. I'm almost finished with their nesting boxes so I way ahead now.

I'm thinking ahead some but I'm anxious to allow them to free range for a while when I'm available to watch over them. I'll lose some to dogs if I'm not there. Can In train them to come to ...say crushed corn when I rattle it in a can...isn't it common to allow them outside the pen occasionally?

Thanks...Perry

I bet the flock enjoys the treats!

Training them to run to you when they hear or see something is pretty easy. I've used the same scoop for scratch forever, and all they have to do is see that scoop (empty or full) and they come running! The main thing is just to keep things constant so they can associate a certain noise or object with a treat. You can rattle the can with crushed corn and then pour the corn out. Eventually, they'll realize the can has the goodies and will come running when they see it.
