Hello! My name is Cory Thompson, I live in Colorado Springs (Widefield, if you know the area) and the attendant at Buckley's Homestead Supply told me about this place when I was asking her some questions about my new coop. My wife and I are both teachers, she in first grade and me in High School. I have three children - 18, 16, and 15 (Senior, Sophomore, and Freshman, respectively) and we go through A LOT of eggs, so we're in it for that - not butchering.
I've had chickens for a year now - last April we got a Speckled Sussex and a Barred Rock. We just recently got four new chicks - Delaware, Buff Orpington, Silver Laced Wyandotte, and Jersey Giant. I am currently in the process of building a new coop for them - it is an A-frame 8'x10' with a 4'x4' roosting/nesting area that will be about 3 1/2' above the ground. I'm venting the top by having the *walls* (they're actually doors that hinge down for gathering eggs and cleaning) stop a few inches short for heat to escape and putting a 4" gap in the floor for cooler air to come in.
We also have two dogs and a bunny. We are going to relocate the bunny to the new chicken coop, as well. I look forward to sharing ideas with and learning from many of you!
