Hi, gee, I've never actually joined a forum before, hope I'm doing this right. I've been reading topics here for a few months now and finding them very educational. So today I thought it would be nice to be a part of of BYC, to get my questions answered. ( I don't have any right now tho) We're not new to chickens, we had them for years when we lived in the deserty south, but not since living up here in the woodsy north. We missed them, and now we have a few again, but management is very different when you have snow on the ground six months of the year. So I'm readin' like crazy and trying to educate myself. So far we have 3 hens and 1 BR roo, and am anticipating getting 2 more hens in the spring. Our coop isn't very big, just big enough for about 6, considering they may be cooped up during the coldest days, but our run is over 1000 sq. feet. I've been putting fall leaves in the run that I bring home from jobs (I have a small garden maintenance business) and the girls love scratching through them. My idea is that come late spring I'll clean out the run and compost the leaves and" goodies" for the compost pile. I'm using the deep litter method in the coop along with DE, and so far, so good with no bad oders in the a.m. when I let them out. Well, I guess I could just go on and on , but I will stop now . Just wanted to say hi and thanks so much for all the info!
