I'm new. I have 15 baby chicks and had one of my two hens murdered by an extremely aggressive raccoon this past weekend. I only have 1 RIR hen left and the baby chicks are too little to "befriend" her. Should I get another he or two so she has a friend or wait? It's so sad!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the loss of your hen :hugs If you can find another hen quickly you could get one, though it will take awhile to introduce them anyhow, especially if you want/need to do a medical quarantine... depending on how old the chicks are, it may be just as fast to wait until they are the 6 weeks or so old enough to go into the coop to keep her company (though still separated from her via wire, until they are the same size she is).

Since the raccoon was successful, it will keep returning till you have nothing left, it may even lead its relatives there. First in order should be securing your coop and run. Have you visited the predator section for ideas on keeping them at bay.

I'm glad you joined our community.

I'm sorry for your losses! I would probably wait until the chicks are older, instead of getting a new hen.

Thanks to all for suggestions. Our tragic week continued when our chicks heat lamp fell somehow, starting a fire and we lost everything.
