I'm new to raising Chickens by myself so I want to learn all I can to be successful and have happy healthy chickens for eggs. I have 5 Rhode Island Reds and three Banta. What's the major differences I need to aware of and what age are they old enough to go outside in the chicken coop.

Thank you, I have a question I have a bantam chick that has gummy poop stuck to its butt and one of its wings look like it's being picked on. What can I do to treat the chick? If anyone can help that would be great. Thank You

Welcome!!!

Look at those cuties! Adorable! Always try to keep their bums clean. I use warm water and a cloth, some people use mineral oil or a tiny bit of soapy water. it takes some time to get it off unless your one of those meanies who just pull quick like a bandaid (OUCH!)

Can you take a picture of the wing?

I'm not sure about the differences in breeds. I don't have either of those. Good luck!

That is called pasty butt. You can put that in the search box and it will pop up . Chicks can die if it isn't taken care of because they are not able to poo. Some folks say a bit of apple cider vinegar added to drinking water will help. Only use plastic bowls if adding vinegar - never in a metal bowl. You can put the chick in the sink with warm water and soak the bum well. Then use mild dish detergent and work through . Once you have the butt clean, use a hair dryer to dry the chick (set on low). You can put some Vaseline around the bum also to try and keep poo from sticking again. Make sure the chick is dried well before going back to the others.
