Hi Everyone.

I am new to the forum. I just joined today. I joined because me and my mother have a lot of questions about how to raise backyard chickens. We have never done it before. I saw this website, and I thought I would give the forum a go.

What sparked our interest in chickens is that we are moving in one week and the house we are moving to has a fenced area with a chicken coop. We thought we would give it a try. Any help or advice for a beginner would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

I recommend a visit to the Learning Centre; lots of good tips there: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

It goes without saying that you should give the coop a good clean and fix any issues which may allow predator access.

If you need any tips as to what alterations the coop may need [if any], this is probably a good place to ask: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/596294/post-your-chicken-coop-pictures-here/16380

Best wishes to you and your mum and enjoy your chickens, they are so much fun!

I hope you also enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Hello There!

Wow, I didnt think I could get a reply that fast! Thanks for all that helpful info! I will be sure to look at each of those sections you gave me!

I actually looked at this site a lot before I joined, I know I am going to Nampa, ID in the USA, and I know the chicken ordinance allows up to ten hens if I am not mistaken, and thats all I know!

I believe I will REALLY enjoy being a member of byc, also! I can already tell this forum was a good choice!

Thanks for the quick reply,

Jared

Great links from Teila, so I'll just say welcome aboard, Jared and enjoy.

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I really appreciate it! Where exactly do I go on the forum to ask general questions? I have a lot of questions about a lot of chicken related topics, like coop heating, what breeds are good for eggs, etc. Where do I go on the forum to ask all these questions?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello again Jared

Navigating BYC can take a little getting used to and on which Forum to post a question can sometimes be tricky, depending on the question.

Your coop heating question I would post on the Coop & Run Forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/9/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance

The egg laying question I would post on the Chicken Behaviours & Egglaying Forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/18/chicken-behaviors-and-egglaying

If a question is posted on the wrong forum it is not the end of the world and can be moved by a moderator if need be.

I definitely recommend a look at the Topic of the Week Archive: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

This is a list of topics already answered by many members so it is a good place to find a lot of answers to a question which has already been asked.

I hope that helped!

Hi there!

Thank you so much for the information on where to post questions. I am still getting used to it, but I am getting the hang of it a little.
