I don't know where you live, but it is raptor migration season. Could these birds be Eagles? Eagles can carry off a chicken! As for shooting them, ahhh NO! All raptors (hawks, owls, Eagles) are FEDERALLY PROTECTED! You are looking at a serious fine, and/or jail time if caught. You might want to try running some hot wire over the top of the run, just make sure you use a ground rod or it won't work.
