My husband and I have talked about getting chickens for a couple of years now, and we finally have them now! We're super excited, and the kids love them. I have three children, two girls (6 and almost 5) and a 1 year old boy. We have 6 chickens now, and I believe they are 4 rhode island reds and 2 easter eggers. My good friend (who told me about this forum) got the chickens for me and raised them for us until we took them home yesterday. We had to get a coop and some other amenities in order first.

We're working on making them friendly birds. We'd love to keep both the easter eggers, but they run off if we try to hold them at all. The reds are much nicer and will allow us to pet them and hold them. I'm not sure what breed the easter eggers are exactly (is that an official breed?). We are raising them for both eggs and meat, and we think one of the reds might be a rooster. Since we live in a neighborhood, that chicken will probably have to go first. We're not technically supposed to have chickens at all, but it's a don't ask, don't tell type of policy for the neighborhood board, and we live in the county so there's no local ordinances against having chickens. We don't want to draw attention to ourselves and have a crowing bird, though. Right now they're indoors until the weather is more predictable and warmer, and until their feathers are all in. I'm thinking they're pretty close with the feathers. We need to finish getting their yard ready and then we'll transfer them outside.

Here are my lovelies! (and please excuse the mess in the background- we're remodeling!) The 4 year old with the chickens

The 6 year old was brave enough to actually hold one of the chickens!

from Colorado!

A tip, a chicken's stomach is the key to it's heart! Spinach leaves, stale bread ends, cooked pasta, whatever. From your hand to their beak and they'll start running to the door when you come.
