I'm Probably Gonna Need My Hand Held Quail Hatch-A-Long

I pulled the lids out and put a regular chick feeder in. Hopefully none of the tinier ones decide to crawl into it and get trapped.
With so many I'd add extra feeders/waterers.

I went down a little bit ago to make sure no one was stuck in the feeder. Every chick I could see had a huge crop. I’ll refill the feeder in a bit just to be sure no one crawls into it for funsies. These little birds are the most suicidal things I’ve ever seen.

My friend that raises quail says the same thing. Also, as soon as you can tell male from female, keep the males separate from each other.

He had them in a mixed pen and one male killed all the rest of the males. He thought he had more time, but they mature quick and become very territorial. Unfortunately his last male up and died, now he has a bunch of females, but no males to breed them.

As an added note he was/is new to raising quail so he may not have had enough space or a good male to female ratio.

With all this snow we got and are getting, meaning this winter is no where near as mild as recent ones… I may not be able to move them out as soon as planned to the big pen I was planning on using as an aviary.

May have to start considering a plan B.

And since I’m using Jan 20th as hatch day for all of them….cant believe the little boogers are 1 week old ready.

Yep...suicidal.

After I took the pic, as I tried to pull the lighter colored one out from where he/she half climbed in, the tiniest yellow one jumps all the way in. I had to unscrew the feeder to rescue it.

Look at all those feathers growing in. They managed to dump most of that feeder out today. I guess I should just go ahead and order a second 50 lb bag of the chick feed at this point.
