As for 4-H, may I suggest you continue to have that pride for them! Perhaps next year with a moult and some fattier foods (I give mine 1 cup for the flock as a treat, Fat and Finish) perhaps there feather condition will perk up.
As long as you are aware that you may be DQ'd, perhaps enter them and see how they handle themselves and see how you will be able to handle them. Experience has a lot of cloute.
Never be ashamed of where, how or what you buy. If they were 100% ready for show, then the guy wouldn't have sold them to you, they would have been kept for the next show etc.
So now you have a super starting point for next years shows. Smile and be super happy!
