I'm so disappointed I could cry...UPDATE****

I have not had good luck w/shipped eggs this year either & that's it-- I did get a pair out of each & from now on, I will only hatch from my own flock---no more shipped eggs. It's not the breeders' fault, it's the shipping. Not blaming the USPS either because I know they have to do their jobs & X-ray a certain number of pkgs & whatever else they do.

Sometimes the packing is beautifully done but the eggs are poor quality or not fertile. I bought 2 dozen Delaware eggs, that were packed exceptionally well, but not a single one developed

I hear that! I want more Bantam Cochins cause I need new blood (and more hens!), but finding eggs locally is not easy. In my town there are only 2 others that keep chickens, and one decided year before last to get rid of his roosters. He buys new hens each year, and only Golden Comets. The other one I wouldn't buy eggs from, their birds are always sick. And in my local area I only know of someone that has buckeyes, which I'm not interested in, and another that has just about every breed that I'm NOT looking for. Though I might call her up and see if she has some more Turkens, ours died and we miss him. I guess I'll have to wait til Chickenstock and see if anyone is bringing Bantam Cochins or BLRW. There is a slim hope that someone might bring some. Last year I was the one bringing the Bantam Cochins. And one other person. I didn't see any others while I was there. It's not til August so maybe I'll start asking now, and see if I can line something up. But unless I sell the chicks and eggs I currently have, there won't be money for new stock.

I've been there and done that.

Tell ya what....I have an order to fill the beginning of next week and then, if you'll pay for the shipping, I'll send you some of my Mottled Cochin eggs. I have one roo over 2 hens and we have excellent fertility.

The roo, Popcorn, is the sweetest, gentlest guy that even my 8 year old grandson handles him. His ladies are Licorice and Milky Way and they're super sweet as well.

Let me know if you're interested.

I hear you as well. My first hatch, with my own eggs was nearly 100% hatch.
Then I got brave and ordered some eggs. I did fine with my cuckoo marans. 11 out of 14 hatched, I have 6 roos and 5 hens.
Then I ordered 12 French blue splash marans. One made it to lockdown but never hatched. I was sent 2 doz. replaacements. One made it to hatch. So now I have 1 lonely BSM chick.
I agree, it always isn't the shipping or our incubating that is the problem.

Next time (if I order shipped eggs again) I am going to ask more details about their breeding stock, ie age, feed, fertility etc. Plus pictures of recent hatches.

I don't like to think that there are dishonest people out there but lets face it, there is.

I bought the BSM eggs on ebay, without any recommendations etc. Big mistake.
I will only buy from BYC members in the future if I do decide to buy ship eggs.

My goal is to someday sell eggs and ship them as well. But first I will check their fertility myself, even mail them to myself, do whatever it takes to ensure my eggs are good enough quality to put up with the shipping etc.

Think about it. How easy it is to sell these eggs at sometimes outrageous prices and then state, once they leave your hands there is no guarantee for hatching.
Don't you think there are people out there that are adding old or known infertile eggs to your order knowing they won't hatch but hey, they don't guarantee that they will !!!
(Please all you honest ones don't take offense)
Hopefully these people are few and far between but you will never really know unless you know who you are buying from. There is alot more going into a healthy fertile egg than you would think. What are the breeders being fed? What are their living conditions like? etc.
Some people are just money hungry and don't invest back into their chickens.
I'm sorry, this is way off topic but I feel I just got burned ,spent a whole lot on one chick. And a lonely one it will be unless I find some BSM's locally. I would think with 3 doz eggs all shipped seperately more than one would hatch. I only paid $4.75 plus ship for the cuckoo's and way more BSM eggs. So you really don't get what you pay for.
There really should be a place where you can post the outcome of your hatches from shipped eggs. That way you can see for yourself what the percentage of hatch is for a particular breeder/seller. I never expected a 100% hatch. I would have been happy with a 40-50% heck even 30% would have been better.
Oh well, now that I have vented. Good luck with your hatch, hope it turns out ok.

WOW! I can totally agree with you on the shipped eggs! I did two hatches of my own eggs to make sure that my incubation skills were up to par before I decided to purchase any shipped eggs. 100% mutt chicks. I have been super interested in the blue marans. I ordered some blue splash marans from EBAY also and they ended up taking way longer than the seller said it would take for them to arrive. 1 week! Okay, my hopes were already shot when I finally received them. One was broken which I think contaminated the others. The packaging was not what it should have been for the distance they were being shipped. I ended up with one lonely blue splash maran which I think is a rooster. I was so angry!! The chick didn't actually match the breed discription either. I contacted the seller and sent them pictures of the chick and they admitted that maybe by chance it could have been mixed with a barred rock! Be very careful what you are buying! They offered to send me more eggs for the price of shipping but I was too dissapointed to deal with them again.
Then I found a nice reliable maran hatching egg seller on BYC! Beautiful eggs and although my hatch rate was only 50% on these, I am very happy with how healthy and gorgeous my chicks are! I know have enough to start breeding my own marans and wont have to purchase new blood for awhile.
It is very unfortunate that there are possibley dishonest sellers out there. I know I felt like a fool when I received my first shipped eggs. Good luck!
Honest sellers don't be offended, I do appreciate you!

That would be wonderful. Let me know what the shipping would be, and I'll see what money I have to spare.

As for those that bought eggs off of E-Bay, I understand your anger and frustration. First I bought some Sebrights on there. Was suppose to be 6 each of Golden and Silver. Only 1 began to develop, but never got past the dark litlte blob phase before it died. The other eggs were all clear. Then, I decided to go cheaper. A lady was selling eggs for $1.99 on there, so I bid and won that auction. She packaged them really well and they arrived in perfect condition, and quickly too. Not a single egg hatched. By this point I was more than a little frustrated. I had already bid on a 3rd auction at this point, and I ended up winning it. It was some pures, and some mixes. There was suppose to be a Phoenix, some White Leghorns, Barred Rocks, and some mixes in there. Again, nothing hatched. Every egg, clear as a bell. I was furious at this point and swore off E-Bay for buying eggs. Then I turned to BYC and got some EE eggs from Atlchick. Man, I was sooooooooooo happy when ALL the eggs made it into lockdown, and then began hatching. And the birds on her page are gorgeous. The chicks I ended up with I am VERY happy with. I will definitely be going back to her later for more eggs since she has Polish and I'd like to try hatching and raising some of those. Then I got to talking to Little_Grey_Bantam and she had the FBCM that I wanted so bad, but I didn't want to spend $35 plus shipping on only 12 eggs, not with my past hatching track record, so I spent the $35 and got her assortment, but she listened and was nice and added 5 FBCM eggs in there for me, and 2 Cuckoos. I received 36 eggs. Most were Speckled Sussex, but there were some Welsummer/Sussex mixes, assorted mixed bantams (all Silkie mixes), 3 Lakenvelder eggs, and my highly anticipated Marans. I put them in my other bator and said a prayer. Of the 36 eggs, only 1 was clear, a Lakenvelder. Of the ones that hatched I ended up (after my losses) with 2 FBCM, 2 Cuckoo Marans, 2 Lakenvelders, 8 Speckled Sussex, 4 Wel/Sussex mixes, 3 bantams, and a Buff Orpington/Cuckoo Marans mix. All the birds are healthy, no crooked beaks, no bent toes, nothing. One of the little Silkie mixes is super tiny though. For awhile we didn't think it would make it, but after 4 weeks it's still feisty and going strong, so I'm not counting it out just yet, lol. Funny thing is, it's STILL almost the same size it was when it hatched! It's so tiny and cute! It's finally starting to get in some wing feathers, and they are coming in black with some copper. It almost looks like a micro version of a FBCM, except it has black skin, feathered legs, and 5 toes, lol. But I know it's a Silkie mix. I'm guessing it's mom is either one of her OEGB's, or her Golden Campine. I hope it grows up so I can see what it turns out to look like.
I just went and checked on the eggs, checking humidity and temp, etc, and I waited and watched to see if any of the eggs were rocking. It might have been my imagination but I think I saw a couple of the Serama eggs moving. I really hope so, these will be my first Seramas. I upped the temp a little since it was lowered from opening the bator to put them on lockdown, and I'm hoping that stabilizes the humidity. I really, really want these to hatch. I wonder if BYC would allow us to create a sticky regarding our positive and negative hatching experiences? Without bashing of course. Just simple facts. I know the last two hatches I had, I got 73% hatch rates on both. It's the ones before that that I kept getting zero hatch rates. Little_Grey_Bantam sent her set of eggs from Kansas. The BLRW came from Ohio, the next state over! The Cochins and Seramas came from Virginia. I am selling my own eggs (well, TRYING is the operative word), and I know as a seller that I do not want to earn a reputation as someone that can't be trusted. I KNOW my eggs are fertile, and as an honest person I would never send old eggs. I'm sure I've probably received more than I could possibly know about, and that is shady dealings. I would never do that to someone! I would also pack as safely as humanly possible to avoid breakage. I am learning who I want to buy eggs from, and who I don't. I also don't mind if people want to see my coop or run, or the adult birds. I had someone come out and buy chicks last week. I took her to the coop first to meet the parents. Why should I be ashamed? Someone not willing to show how their birds live is not really someone I want to deal with. I am proud of my birds. I aimed more for temperment in the beginning, but now I'm trying to get some with good temperment and quality. That's not easy! And with my standards, for now I am simply breeding to get more layers because the girls I have right now are awesome. 9 hens and I get 6 to 9 eggs every day. I just LOVE those ladies! And the chick I hatched out of those eggs (cause I only had room in the bator for 2 of my own standard eggs last hatch, and one pipped but didn't hatch) has the same wonderful, docile temperment that her mama and daddy have, and that's what I was aiming for. And surprisingly, she came out solid yellow! Mama is an Amber Sexlink that was suppose to be a roo, but turned out to be a hen, cause she was a yellow chick, and is now red on top and fading into white in her hips and rear, she's gorgeous, and my roo is a Silver Cuckoo Marans. The chick, Rose, has blue eyes like her daddy had as a chick, orange legs like her mom had, and the stature of a Marans. But she isn't as big as my full breed Marans chicks, so she'll probably only be around her mom's size. I'm proud of her, she's a little doll! I need to hatch more of my own eggs. I feel it's neccesary in order for people to trust that the eggs I send are fertile like I am saying they are. I know they are fertile, but for people that don't know me, how are they to know it without cracking open the eggs? I would expect the same courtesy from people that I purchase eggs from, to be honest and upfront right from the start, but I guess not everyone thinks like I do. So, I guess I'll know in 3 days whether I have any BLRW's. I'll keep everyone posted.

Shipped eggs can be very fickle, often due to postal delays and/ or rough handling. I incubated 48 eggs which were shipped from 6 different sources and only succeeded in hatching 13 of which 11 were cockerels.............

! As an (ovolacto)vegetarian those boys were not so useful and finding homes for Brahma boys (beautiful but huge) was not easy, so I kept most and my poor girls are run ragged. Now I am incubating eggs from my own hens and seem to have 100% fertility right now:jumpy (So those excess boys did have a purpose after all!)
Anyway good luck with all your incubations and glad you have some healthy chicks to show for the effort.

Sorry about your disappointment. Shipped eggs are definitely a gamble.

NONE of my white cochin eggs hatched so I feel your pain.
