What a great online community! I've been reading as much as I can here to educate myself, as we just got our first chicks nearly 2 weeks ago. We have 3 Barred Rocks that are 16 days old now, a black Silkie pullet (Olive) who I believe was hatched in January, and a Crested Polish who's around the same age as the chicks. All will be hens, except for the Polish who was a straight run and still unknown. I'm really hoping it's not a rooster, since we live in the city limits and our neighbors won't appreciate that! We have a few friends we keep chickens, so I won't have an issue finding a place for the Polish if needed. I'll just be so sad if that happens, because I've been hand raising all of them. It's unbelievable how tame they are already. I put them in a laundry basket and bring them into the house several times a day to hold them. They snuggle up to my chest and sleep. Nothing could be cuter!
My husband will probably be happy I've found this place, because all I talk about now is the chicks and how/what they are doing. He said to me last night we'll have to start having "no chicken Monday, Tuesday, etc" where chicken conversations are off limits. Yeah, like that will happen! I'm already being called The Crazy Chicken Lady by my friends. That's fine, I'll own it!
We've raised ducks in the past, so I kind of knew what I was getting into with chicks. So far, they have been far easier than the ducks. I'm so in love with my babies, I wish we would have done this a long time ago. I'm starting out with chickens in our backyard, but our ultimate goal is to find a place with acreage and have a small farm. We'll eventually keep goats, more chickens, and possibly a cow. I've always been a huge animal lover, so farm animals seems like the next frontier for us. In addition to my crazy-looking brood, I have 2 dogs and 2 cats.
