I just read in our daily newspaper that the company AgriProtein and the University of Stellenbosch started researching a cheaper, more sustainable way to feed broilers. They found the perfect product... maggots!

They've done an experiment on 1 000 chickens and were quite happy with the results. The human consumers, on the other hand, are not very happy...

My free-ranging chickens always went nuts when I dumped the stuff I cleaned out of the rabbitry in the pasture. I preferred not to think about it too much.

What do you think chickens eat? If they ate anything palatable to us we wouldn't need chickens. Like all food animals, they convert what we don't like into something we do like. It's the same with vegetables, except that vegetables don't clean bird poop off themselves.

I wouldn't let that ruin chicken eating for you. That's what chickens eat.. bugs. According to all of those survival shows where they are always eating bugs they say they are high in protein. Maggots are gross, sure, but they are long gone by the time your chicken hits the barbecue.

"Maggot" is a vague term. It can be used to describe the larval form of a good many kinds of insects. Did the newspaper article specify the kind of maggot?

When the word is used many people think of stuff like house fly maggots or the types of maggots that feed on rotting flesh, but there are many others. Depending on the species and food source they may be a good way to go in feeding poultry.

House flies. And the consumers (humans) are not happy, as I said. I've stopped eating chicken years ago, as I don't like the way they are treated on farms. Not what they are fed. I just had a good laugh at the article. Apparently people are convinced it'll influence the taste of the meat. Well, it's an improvement on fish meal... But, yeah, eating something that was raised on maggots... it's a bit gross.
