I'm Stressing Out Over All Of My Hens Health Please Help. Are My Hens Sick?

High producing birds like my California White are egg machines who lay daily and rarely skip.

My Australorps, before they started to molt, generally laid 6 out of 7.

My SLW laid 5 of 7 and my Light Brahma 4 or 5 out of 7.

Breed matters as well as age.

My hens are two and three years old and working on their fall molt. Out of about 15 layers I am now getting anywhere from 3 to 7 eggs on any given day. This will no doubt drop off even more through the short winter days. They're still healthy, just converting protein into feathers instead of into eggs right now, and their bodies will need more sunlight to produce eggs. It's just nature's way.

My barred rock Cookie lays an egg 5 to 6 out of 7 days.
My buff orp Goldie lays about 5 out of 7. Her eggs have a weird color/texture to them. Cookies are a beautiful brown but they are still small and Goldies are too. Goldie is 7mos and Cookie will be 8 mos in a couple weeks. Im guessing their eggs will get bigger as they get older.

I was right, for a few weeks we got no eggs. But they are picking up the pace pretty well now, especially my EE. I got 8 green eggs yesterday. I can't assume they are all from my 8 OG girls, though, as at least 2 of them could be pullet eggs, they are a bit small. I have 7 EE pullets, about 5 months old. Last year when it was so cold and the sun forgot to shine, toward the end of February I added light every evening to stimulate laying. I'm happy that's not necessary this year!

Yes, pullets typically start out laying a smaller egg. In a few weeks they should start getting bigger but may not get to full size for a few months at least. Next year they may be ginormous!
