I'm worried about causing a fire..

i want to add heat lamps in my coop and goat pen, but i am scared that one will get knocked down and hit the shavings or straw...what can i use that is very safe for heat?...i was thinking of those electric heaters that look like wood stoves(do you know what i mean?)..they dont get hot on the outside at all...any ideas...i can post a pic of the heater i am thinking of if anyone needs it..thanks, Wendy

are you not comfortable with just securing a heat lamp somewhere that you can be sure wont be disturbed?
I know the heater you are talking about, I have one, it looks like a ben franklin stove, i got it from home depot. That would certainly be safer, but its a little fancy for the chicken coop!
What will you do next, have a pot of coffee on for them when they wake up in the morning?

If you are really worried about them knocking it down then find another type of clamp, nuts and bolts, bailing wire or some other wire to secure it permantly. I don't blame you for being concerned about fire, just be inventive and find a way to secure it. Good Luck!

i dont know what your chicken area is like, but i was concerned about placing a heat lamp in a coop for that same reason. so my answer was to hang it inside the coop, secure it in there, but then for my peace of mind, it was actually secured outside of the coop as well. That way there was nothing they could do inside to cause it to fall.
However, that being said, i used that heater that you are talking about to heat a pretty large space all winter and it worked great. And who am i to tell you that your chicken coop is too fancy! We are actually using mine out in the barn too, but its in my husbands wood shop now. And in terms of safely adding heat, that would be the way to go.

How about the oil filled radiator space heaters? They're efficient and pretty low risk. You would need to securely anchor it and find a way to keep the chickens off.

and keep the goat off for that matter, given the way the goats like to find the highest point possible and stand there. I came home one time to find my goat standing on top of my car...
