I have chicks hatching from eggs next week. Do chicks need to be immunized when hatched? When you get chicks from McMurray they are immunized so I am wondering if this is something everyone knows about... 'cept me

Those that you get from a hatchery are vaccinated if you request it.
I didn't have my chicks vaccinated either.

Mine were vaccinated for Marek's disease by the hatchery but I think it's more important to feed medicated feed when they're young more than vaccinating. If you want to go organic, wait until you transition them to a grower feed.

Okay, this is a common misconception.
Hatcheries cannot vaccinate against coccidiosis because it is not a disease but a parasitic infestation. That's why you feed the medicated chick starter, to help protect against the coccidia.
Vaccinations protect against such diseases such as Marek's.

There IS a cocci vaccine... however you should read about it and your options with cocci to help you decide if you want to take this route or stick with med starter:

Okay, I stand corrected. What I was trying to address is the misconception that some people seem to have. They tell the hatchery to vaccinate (usually against Marek's, which was the only vaccine the hatchery offered me) and think they don't need the medicated chick starter because of it. Thanks for the link.

Where can I purchase the mareks vaccine? Is it safe to have non vaccinated birds, and vaccinated birds together? Im thinking about vaccinating all of my chicks this spring, but the other birds I have not, arent.

This
site has several articles on common diseases in Poultry. They have an online store where you can purchase a large variety of products including vaccines.

Randall Burkey Company one of the sponsors of this site also sells vaccines. I find that Jeffers Livestock Supply usually has the best price.
