I have a hen with impacted crop and I have given her water massaged her crop, and put her in a box with no food. I am ready to give her olive oil, but I don't have any. I do, however, have grapeseed oil. Can I use that instead of olive oil? Is grape seed oil okay for chickens to have? Any other suggestions would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance for any help!

When did you find out she had impacted crop? Did you check her the nest morning before she got off the roost to eat and see if it was still impacted before You started doing anything?

Just found out what it was. Today i bought a Hentastic chicken snack for my girls and fed the whole thing to them. Was squishable like clay. Didn't think anything of it. She ate a ton of it, it all lumped together in her crop. I'm probably going to have to do surgery. She will not be able to digest that. I feel so bad now!

But if she ate a lot her crop will be full----really full, I would have suggested you check her first thing in the morning before she ate and see if it was gone. I have been raising chickens over 50 years and have never had a impacted crop---Yes many hens go to the roost with huge knots in their crop----but they all be gone in the morning. You can do damage trying to get food back up---when they probably was not anything wrong to start with.

I didn't do anything else to her crop. I just decided to let her be until the morning. I'm praying she'll be empty. I've been having way too many health issues with my chickens, I can't keep them straight (luckily all have been cured that i knew of) and more things just keep popping up! I thought having chickens was just going to be a fun, relaxing experiance, not panicking at nine thirty at night that my hen has an indigestable hen treat in her crop. Thanks for all your help! I'll update everyone in the morning.

LOL Raising chickens has always been fun to me---well 99% of the time But I don't buy Hentastic snacks or other snacks----Mine get chicken feed formulated for their age and if I give them a snack--piece of bread/table scraps/etc----they only get a small amount. Good Luck and do let us know in the morning. Thanks

I have no experience with an impacted crop.

But for future feeding...moderation is the key to feeding animals/birds. When a new food is introduced there needs to be time for the body to adjust to it. It does so by building good bacteria to deal with the new foodstuffs. When the bacteria is overloaded, they can't do their job properly, the entire process starts to breakdown and problems arise.

Start with introducing smaller amounts of the new food given in addition to their current diet and gradually increase the amount over time ensures a healthy gut flora. :)
