I hear it could take longer than 6months to start laying we got lucky and one hen out 19 has been laying for two weeks almost everyday.......... so i am being impatient for the rest to start............
My girls are 20 weeks old now and still no eggs. 2 BR, 2 Prod. Reds 2 Red Sex link...not sure if those are all the same or not, 1 EE, I also bought 2 BO as girls, but they are little boys instead I didn't need any more. A friend of mine has RIR's and they started laying at 18 wks to the day. I haven't been very patient, they get lectured every day.
Evisioning the lecture to the chicks gave me a chuckle. Mine aren't laying yet either -- I think they are about 15 weeks old so still have a few weeks before I can even expect to see eggs. I know I'll be excited when that time comes but I'll wait about 6 weeks to start lectures if they haven't begun laying by then
I'm a little surprised none of your are laying. I have 4 BR that are 6 months old max, one started laying about 4 weeks ago, and then the other two started up this last week. And now it's 3 eggs a day for 3 days so far. Fun! But do look around, mine did not put their eggs where I expected and I eventually even found a few broken ones under their roost. Silly chickens!
Update - still no eggs. And to make matters worse, I have a friend who got her flock of 10 Buff Orps and Barred Rocks from the very same batch as me, and she reported yesterday that they found THREE eggs. And she made sure to really rub it in.
She did get a roo in her batch - could he have gotten them in the laying mood earlier?
I've looked all over the coop and yard just in case they were out of sight and still nothing. Oh well, the wait continues. They are on layer feed and a small amount of oyster shells, and to help with the heat I started filling empty milk cartons with water and freezing them to put in the coop where they hang out during the hottest part of the day. They seem to enjoy the "a/c." Maybe they'll enjoy it enough to decide to lay an egg!
Still no eggs for me either, my lectures aren't working
I don't know why. I think of it as more of a motivational speech, ending in a threat like "if you don't hurry I am just going to eat you!". They seem to be ignoring me, and my friend that got eggs at 18 weeks to the day just laughs when I give her my egg updates, my son who is almost 5 asks me why I'm so worried about it. He's not supposed to question me at that age is he
I can't keep them locked up so I let them out and try to search the areas they hang out, but there are some tall weeds on the side of a hill that are just too much for me, we search the areas you can tell have been gone through.
CONGRATS! See....patience pays off although I was pretty IMpatient waiting for my girls to lay. Now, I get 2 eggs a day and I have 8 girls. I want the rest to start laying so I get 3 a day, then 4 a day, etc....LOL! I have family and friends waiting for full production so they can have fresh eggs too
