In a attempt to help my flock stay cool I put bottles of water in there water container. But Texas weather has been really hot next expected to get to 110 F this weekend. The thing is at it gets so hot here that the water ends up being hot even with the ice.

Well brainstorming about how I could keep the water cooler I thought about dry ice. So my question is has anyone tried it? If put in the water will they make the water toxic or anyting? Will the Ice start to melt or will it stay in the form? Any ideas questions or even concerns or welcomed.

I was thinking that if it wasn't a good idea for it to go in their water container maybe I could place it in front of a fan for them.

Dry ice is just frozen carbon dioxide. Basically, dry ice evaporates pretty quickly in water, due to its heat capacity, and in the process, it makes a lot of non-toxic steam (unless you sit in it for an extended period of time. It's not poisonous, but it doesn't have any free oxygen in it, either.)

Not sure how the fan would work.

I'm in Southern CA and we're hitting the 100 temp mark way too much already, so I have 3 waterers out in various spots so at least one won't get hot. I've also started letting the hose/water run for a few minuets, long enough to get cool, and just let it puddle up, in a shady spot. They'll run to go stand in the running water, then scratch thru the mud... eventually laying down in the hole they've dug. I also have 3 bushy plants in their run (300 sq ft) with plastic pots around the base to protect the plants, and dump their dirty water on these plants daily, so they also lay in the holes they dig next to them. Even on the hottest days, I can find some moist soil.
You can also give them frozen treats. My girls are getting over a mite issue, and are underweight, so I'm giving them a scrambled egg daily with some feed mixed, but after I've frozen it a bit. I also give them frozen corn, fruits, etc.
I tried misters but my girls didn't like it, nor did they like water in a tub, mud is their preference.
My girls are currently using the tomato plant as their cool house.
