None of my chickens are laying yet that I got in the beginning of October. I have SLW and Amerucanas. I free range them and feed a diet of layer crumbles and some scratch.

Yesterday afternoon one of the girls was in a nest box, but she didn't lay. Do you think they might start soon? I thought they would have started egg production a month ago and I'm still waiting.

Sounds like they're getting ready to lay. Are their faces getting more red? Do they squat when you go near them? It won't be long now. Enjoy your fresh eggs.

Well, 20 weeks old is the average age....but some pullets take longer to start.......now, I free range mine too, but once they were near laying age, I kept them locked up until around 4:00pm, and I let them free range half days. That way, they would get used to laying in their nest boxes, instead of some cozy schrub or bush. No hide n seek.
