My sweet hen, Piper, passed away this afternoon. She was a white leg horn, and was only seven months old. Piper started appearing sick a week ago. She was having a hard time walking and was continually losing her balance. I immediately knew something was wrong, so I did research and started treating her. At first, I thought something was wrong with her legs, so I treated her accordingly. After doing more research, I figured out that it more likely she had been poisoned. Her symptoms were much like that of a chicken that had eaten something toxic. I started trying to flush the toxins out of her system. She didn’t get better or worse. At this point, she was almost unable to walk and if she tried to stand, she would fall over. Yesterday she seemed to be doing much better. She was able to stand and even walk. She had to focus hard on walking and did it very slowly, but it was a huge improvement. This morning when I checked on her she was standing and seemed the same as yesterday. I was so hopeful that she was getting better! This afternoon I went out to retrieve her so that I would be able to continue treatment. When I arrived to where I was keeping her, my heart sunk. There my beloved Piper was, her eyes almost glazed, and she was lying on the floor, her whole body almost completely paralyzed. She was still alive though! I quickly picked her up to examine her, but I knew that she had to be put down. She was dying and it would be too cruel to let her live. I ran inside to get help, because I couldn’t put her down myself. It would hurt too much, so I needed someone else to do it. When I came back to where she was, she was gone. My precious and beloved Piper had passed. She was buried in our backyard, near where another sweet hen of mine had been buried a year ago. I loved you so much, Piper. I wish that I could have saved you, and you will forever have a special place in my heart.

PLEASE READ: I didn’t post this because I am wanting to know how she died. I am fairly certain of what happened to her. I posted this in honor and memory of my beloved hen who I loved very much. I just wanted to share my beautiful girl’s story
