Hi All.

I am currently living in Houston, Texas. Deep in the city.

I am from a small town near Austin, and plan to eventually move back out to the country. When I do, I plan to have a flock of chickens, and many other things.

I am hoping to get starting learning, soon, however... With some practical knowledge - aka hands on. But where I live at the moment, I am pretty sure I can not even have a single hen.

glad you have joined us.

Planning and dreaming is part of the experience. You should explore the learning center articles - there's so much useful information there to help you learn how to raise and care for a flock. Visit the coops and runs photos and forums for ideas.

Also, explore the article on the pros and cons of raising chickens to see if this is something you want to commit to.

Start a planning notebook to gather your information, pics and wish list. And hopefully it will turn into reality one day.

x2 on the Learning Center, it's full of helpful articles to get you off on the right foot. And of course, you can always ask questions.

It's nice to have you here!

I am also kind of hoping to find some nice folks that live close enough, that they would let me come and visit their hens, for a little hands-on experience.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. You may be able to get by having a bantam house chicken or two. Check out "people with house chickens," thread. My friend has 4 house chickens, and has had house chickens for over 25 years. The small breeds like serama and silkies, seem to do best. Just don't get any roosters.
