In memory of Bonnie

We lost one of our two young Barnevelder chicks on Wednesday to a snake that tried to eat her and failed. She was only about 5 weeks old. I feel so guilty. We knew there was a chance of snakes getting in, but thought we had it where the only ones that could get on would be too small to hurt the chickens.

We laid her to rest today. Even though we only knew her a few short weeks. We loved her. Farewell sweet Bonnie, you will be missed.

Bonnie was an adorable baby; I'm very sorry for your loss.

It's easy to think that your chickens are safe when they're not. I forgot to close a coop door once -- that's how I found out my run wasn't as predator proof as I thought it was. I have made improvements.

Whenever I lose critters, I try to take some consolation in thinking they were well cared for during their lives, however brief, and that they could feel that love.
