In need of some mite suggestions/help!

Just wondering how your mite attack has progressed.  Did anything work for you?  Thought it might be good to post the outcome on what worked and what didn't for others to read.  Hope things are under control and you're able to enjoy your chicks.

It makes me tired just reading it! I think you get the gold medal for persistence in mite eradication. Thank you for taking the time to list everything. I find so many threads have a lot of good information and then the person is going to implement a strategy, but the outcome doesn't get posted. When I read through them, I think - "Oh darn! I wish I knew if that ended up working or not." So, thank you for taking the time to do all that. These threads are good references to refer to in the future!

Look in corners of the coop, most mites hide there.
Also i would recommend buying some product to get rid of the mite.

What type of product other than removing items with the mites on them, the bug fogger, DE, hydrated lime whitewash (like a paint) and the bleach/water solution? We will be dusting the three birds with the dusting powder too. If you have more info, let me know.

This is just what we tried and I put it on here to provide info on what my method of attack. It may or may not work but I will try to provide updates on my successes and failures in hopes of helping others!

I absolutely agree! When I was looking into info on the mites quite a few threads just ended with no real info on the process or the outcome. I hope to help people, but who knows if my method will work. I just went with what info I had and attacked! Lol! Thanks for being supportive and helpful!

We currently have our 17 guineas in a utility shed and an enclosed run, but are getting a new shed delivered soon. Once we committed to keeping them year round, we realized we needed a structure double the size of the current one. I think I'm going to paint the interior with a high gloss paint to keep it sealed, hopefully to deter insects, and make for an easier clean up when necessary. Always something to keep us busy!

With the whitewash "white" it really brightens up the place! It is like night and day in the difference! Still trying to get time to post pictures....

After whitewashing the walls and replacing the plywood piece. You can see the open space below the walls that I had to back fill with more dirt after we lifted and leveled the coop. It took so many loads in our quad trailer then into a wheel barrow, then dumped into the coop and spread out.

Lots of heavy damp dirt!

You can see the galvanized metal sheeting we put up on the walls (below)

Our gated area into the run or coop. Needed to clean out the old hay area that was moldy and dusty. I cleaned it really well, down to dirt then sprinkled hydrated lime on the dirt, then shavings on top.

After....so clean and it looks/smells nice!

My daughter and our new hens! We are so happy!

Below are the laying boxes flush mounted to the wall. It shows the access holes from the outside. We haven't finished the access doors yet so currently we just screwed on two boards covering the holes.

A few pictures from the renovations/clean up. I will post more once I get a decent day with better sunlight. Currently been very rainy and dark which does not help when taking pictures!

Great photos and description of what you did, Kmhv04. Thanks! That last photo of the laying boxes is stunning - I really like the way the natural light filters through the openings. I can't believe how much work you have done. So nice to have the pic of your chickens and your daughter too. What a unique experience for her - to grow up with chickens.

Thank you for taking the time to post and for sharing all of your experiences. I too have been using wood shavings and plan on doing that in our new coop too. I think I will build up an area under the roosts to enable me to put in 5 inches and just remove any of the top that's wet - adding sweet PDZ and new wood chips as I go. My neighbor uses straw, but I just like the way the wood chips can be raked and removed. Personal preference....

Treat mites external pest and international worms with Ivermectin!!, I swear by it and it will keep working for weeks.
