In need of some mite suggestions/help!

dried mint leaves and other garden herbs can get rid of mites and lice and stuff like those critters. they hate the smell. it may not work as fast as the elector psp, but it may be worth a shot and save you some money to.
Unfortunately, Bob, that is untrue. If culinary herbs were an effective insecticide, we would all be using them for this purpose in our flocks, in our yards and on ourselves. Mint and other garden herbs are not repellents or eradicators of mites, lice, flies or mosquitos.

I would like to add bowl weevils, fire ants, aphids, corn bores, plant lice, army worms, and every other species of agricultural pest to the list.

However Permethrin, a pesticide that mimics the actions of the natural insecticide pyrithiamine that is found in chrysanthemum blossoms will in fact kill chicken mites and lice graveyard dead. You only need to produce enough chrysanthemum blooms, dry them sufficiently, then spend a week or two with a mortar and pestle pounding and grinding 10 pounds or so of the dried flowers into a fine snuff like powder, then apply this powder to your birds and their coop to kill the mites and lice living there.

Go to Pinterest and look for HOW TO HERBIFY YOUR CHICKEN COOPS by LISA STEELE. She has her own website called fresheggsdaily.com and she is affiliated with Abundant Permaculture. Which is owned and operated by Justin Rhodes. He has a package out with a film, a dvd, an eBook of the film to print out and he knows his stuff. Well in the film Lisa Steele talks about all these different kinds of herbs to use to help keep all of those critters at bay along with adding some of the herbs to some feed and things that they can do for you. I am a Premium Edition holder of Justin Rhodes film package which is called Permaculture Chickens. It was one of the best things I ever spent money on. I am just a beginner really, but I have already made my money back in one month and paid for the entire program just by using some of his Permaculture processes in the film.

But if you go to pinterest and type in what I put up top, you can read all about it. Just remember, I am a beginner and I am following the permaculture plans along with Lisa Steele's knowledge on the herbs and I am not having any problems to date.

If anyone would like to know more, just send me your email address and I can send you all kinds of information along with videos to watch from Abundant Permaculture. There are some free classes to sign up for also where Justin teaches you how to work with mother nature and your chickens together to do your gardening in a very short time per week.

Again, I am no expert, but I just study the film along with his classes and daily vlogs.

I wonder about that insulation that was covered with infested plywood and is now covered with sheet metal......
......sounds like the perfect place for an insect to set up habitation / proliferation and is now in accessible to treatment.
@Kmhv04 was that insulation removed and/or treated behind it?

Same goes for the suggestion of linoleum(more probably vinyl) on floor and going partway up the wall, mites know no bounds.
Occluded surfaces(where one surface meets another) is a perfect place for 'things' to grow both insects and much smaller organisms.

You are absolutely right! I am the OP and we are still dealing with mites! I haven't had the chance to update this tread as it's been busy this summer.

I am now in a panic to find something with ZERO egg withdrawal as we have 30 chickens and customers requiring eggs. I am really disappointed my efforts were in vain!

We did remove the infested plywood, but only certain sections. The insulation behind it was poly'd over, but am sure the buggers were in there (knowledge/impression after the fact).

We live in Canada and I am having a hell of a time tracking down a poultry product with "Spinosad" in it (like the US "Elector PSP" everyone is raving about). Spinosad has apparently ZERO egg withdrawal and is considered "safe" or "organic" at this point.

Any ideas if "garden spray" with the same type of "Spinosad" would be okay to try using? (Just throwing it out there).

Thanks all for your help and discussion!

Elanco is the manufacturer of Elector PSP. You can contact them to find out where you can purchase it in Canada. I would think that some of the retailers that sell it in the U.S. would be willing to ship it to Canada.

Many people use garden powders and garden sprays on their birds. You would need to be sure than spinosad is the only active ingredient, as you don't want to have additional ingredients in your spray that you weren't expecting. You will need to make up the spinosad to the proper dilution. Elector PSP is sold as a concentrate of 44.2%, and the directions call for the concentrate to be diluted using 9 ml to a gallon of water. When you do all the math, that comes out to be essentially 0.1% spinosad to be used for application directly to the bird and the coop. There could potentially be a concern about the inert ingredients, if there is something in there that could be dangerous to a live bird. That's unlikely, but I certainly wouldn't spray it on the entire flock the first time.

I'm not sure there's any way to rid the coop of mites without stripping it down to the studs and soaking it with an effective insecticide.
I doubt there's anything that will kill the mites with no withdrawal on egg or meat.

I see you started a thread and got a possibility from Kathy to at least knock them down....but maybe try this Canadian chat thread for some other ideas too?

Very sorry to hear that you are STILL having problems after all your hard work. I hope you are able to find something to help your problem and you don't have to live this nightmare for much longer. It sounds like you may always have problems with that coop even if you treat the birds. Thinking of you....
