In or Out - Cruel to leave a dog outdoors? Opinions Are Appreciated!

If I was working, things would be different. Our pup only sees the inside of his crate at night, when he goes in it without being told to because it's his preferred place to sleep. His crate is the largest one we could find to purchase.
We take several long walks on the farm each day, not always easy for me since I am disabled. There's also lots of romps in the yard. Leave him alone outside for five minutes and he's scratching to get back in, to be with his family.
I think it's different with LGD. Their flock/herd IS their family and that's where they want to be.

Don't mind me. My dog is a smelly dog. She loves the rain and digs holes in the field to lie down in. She also eats a lot of dried duck poop. It's just that there are pro's and con's for every situation.

I have 2 basset hounds that live out doors .

1 because we got 1 when he was around 8 and no matter what we did he was never housed trained . We would try and try again and after so many new couches ,rugs and chairs is was just to much .

another reason is they didnt like our cats , they would litteraly try and attack them .

they have a wooden shed that is insulated and heated so in the winter they are just as happy . They are let out daily to run around and are given baths and played with and they are very happy living out side

Now peoapl who have dogs and just stick them out side and just feed them and give them water and dont pay any attention to them is a different story

If we are having very very bad weather we put them in the work shop that is also heated and has tv for them to watch

My opinion: Dogs are pets not farm animals. They should be kept indoors.

My dog goes out for much of the day but stays in if it is raining. During the winter, he pretty much only goes out for potty breaks. Even though he could stay out for quite a while since he is an American Eskimo with plenty of fur (so I hear you on the fur bunnies!).

I love my dog. She is a good pup but outside is the only way to go for a dog. animals in the house is not a good thing unless you want to have the odor around. My opinion.

I'm surprised this tread is doing so good. ! Everything has been cival so far.
Keep it up

I have always had outdoor dogs - not one indoor dog in 54 years.

I know that some of the smaller breeds are better kept inside, but if you have a hunting breed or farm dog- they need and love room to run.
I have been fortunate enough to live in the country and have not had to chain a dog and would not have a dog if I had to do that.

We did go to an animal shelter to adopt an english setter one time, and they would not let us, as we told them he would be an outside dog. they would rather have him chained to a dog house in their fenced area. go figure.

Just curious, but I was wondering if those living on large properties/farms with other farm animals tended to keep their dogs outside as opposed to us small acreage city slickers:idunno
In my neck of the woods this seems to be the norm.

My dogs or house never smells. Guess they are just great butt lickers.
