I don't like or want Obamacare. I don't agree with any of these groups that think violence will solve their problems.

But really!! What did we as a nation expect? One of the beauties of our nation is that we have free elections and can choose our leaders. We, as a nation, chose this man. Maybe not you or I, but we all had an opportunity to vote. We heard everything the candidates said (or atleast had that opportunity). Obama is mearly doing what he said he would do. You can't fault him for that.

Like I tell my kids...according to the Bible, God causes kingdoms (or goverment leaderships) to rise and to fall. Perhaps as a nation we needed this wake up call. One thing is for sure, none of this caught God by surprise. And the good news is that elections are coming. Yeah. We will have an opportunity to fix this mess. Perhaps we will make better choices then.

My students and I talked about personal budgets yesterday. I was teaching them how to create a personal budget and then sending them out to do a sample one so life after graduation won't be a huge shock. Anyway... we were talking about things that fall under the non-negotiable category (things that you HAVE to pay for each month as opposed to non-essential things). One of the categories was insurance. When I pointed out that now they were REQUIRED to purchase health insurance they were shocked. "That's not FAIR!!!" was pretty much what they all said. I pointed out that this new bill made it illegal for them not to carry health insurance and that if they chose to not buy it the IRs would take the money in April anyway, whether they had it to spend or not. They were outraged and stunned.

The interesting thing to me about this is that these college kids had no idea what was going on in our country. These are the same kids that voted in a lot of our representatives and the president and yet they had no clue what these people had intended when they said health care reform. It's like the members of congress that didn't actually read the entire bill. How are we as a nation to survive if the people voting and the people passing bills cannot take the time to do a little research? We are being sucked in by splashy TV commercials and political rhetoric (on both sides). It is politics by sound bite!

There are many things about the younger generations that bother me (things I have seen as their teacher). This lack of depth truly concerns me. They will believe anything you tell them if you present it prettily enough. That is a scary, scary thing. Most of them heard "health care reform" and thought it would make their life better. The reality is that these kids are getting out of school and going into freelance jobs that pay maybe $10/ hour. They will be working 40 hours some weeks, but just as likely will be working 5 hours some weeks. Freelancing is a struggle for the first couple of years and there is no employer provided health insurance. Unfortunately the new bill did not set limits on what insurance companies could charge for this now required health insurance. My kids will have to choose between paying the rent and paying for their insurance some months. All I could do was try to impress upon them the importance of saving as much money as they could during the fat times so the lean times wouldn't leave them living on the streets. For some, that will happen anyway.
