My dad has had chickens since I was in Jr High but I never really did anything with them or had interest. He convinced us to get them for our daughters (2 & 4) so we took the leap. We got our coop built last fall and added chicks this spring.
We are located in Ohio so we got a few Buckeye’s and added 2 New Hampshire Reds. Being new to this we rounded out the flock with hatchery pick. I ended up with (I am 87% positive) 2 Dominique’s, 2 Blue Ameracauna’s, and one each of Sicilian Buttercup, Splash Andalusian, Black Australorp, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Ancona, Frost White Legbar and a Cochin that we lost week 2.
I work in government sales for a tractor manufacturer and the pickup day, March 17th, was the day I was asked to begin working remote. Being home, I really took over taking care of them, I even put their brooder right next to my workspace. I did not initially do this for me but I have found so much joy in raising them and being around them is so peaceful!
We live in town but are a very outdoor oriented family; enjoying a lot of hiking, fishing and camping. We have one dog, a 10 month-old Beagle, Maverick, who is very curious about the girls. He has only had one unsupervised interaction with our Ancona, who held her own!! Security has been increased
I first found BYC when our Cochin was sick and have returned on numerous occasions to gain knowledge from members experience. After 2 months I figured I should probably join!
Here are some pics of the girls -
