In search of pictures of suburban backyard coops!

I love the roof! It's a planting box, yes?

Thank you! Yes, it is a planting box, or a 'green roof'. It is just OSB covered with pond liner and the sides are cheap cedar fence boards. We put down a couple inches of lava rock and then filled it in with soil to about 1" depth over the rock. Right now we only have succulents planted but I think we may put some flowers in and I am considering trying to get a couple head of lettuce going for hen snacks :)

PDX, I like your coop! Ours will be the same dimensions. Can you share a photo of the interior someday? We're finishing up, and I'm worried about where we'll put the guts (roosts, box, etc). I also like the green roof! Nice!

Thanks! As you can see in the picture in my previous post we put the nest boxes (2) on the outside of the coop. In the picture below the nest box access is on the right, I have covered the entrance with plywood until the pullets get closer to laying age (they are only 12-13 wks). The feeder and waterer are temporary. I am going to install a 5 gallon bucket/pvc/nipple system with a pvc line in the coop and one in the run when the time is right, again I am waiting for the pullets to get bigger so I don't have raise the pipe as they age, I only want to install it once.

The roost and poop board are under going trials now. I am a little concerned with the lack of room for them to jump down from the edge of the poop board (it is only about 18 inches from the front edge of the poop board to the wall on the right. I also don't know how high their heads/backs will be when they are full grown with regard to keeping them out of drafts from the ventilation along the top. So I may have to abandon the poop board and drop the roost down a few inches. But it seems to be working now and they are already starting to jump off the front edge of the poop board at an angle towards the back wall which gives them plenty of room to jump down without hitting a wall...but we'll see! Good luck!

Here's ours. We have a 1/2 acre suburban lot. The coop is 4x8, and the run (including the space under the coop) is 4x16. We cleared out a section of flower bed at the back of the lot. Zoning requires the coop to be 40' from any residence (ours or the neighbors).
That is amazing! Our lot isn't quite that big, but I could see a mini version of that. How many chickens do you currently have housed in there?

Here is mine. We have the patio but no grass here, too much watering! Our yard is teeeeensy tiny. The coop was still a work in progress when this was taken so pardon the mess :)

We have eight, which may be a couple too many. But we let them out in the yard for a couple of hours each day.

That's what I plan to do, let them in the yard during the day while I'm home. Can't wait to see them pecking in the grass. :)

Have you seen this coop? It's not mine, but I'm a BIG fan of how gorgeous this coop is. I'd probably make the run a bit bigger, but otherwise, it's adorable. There is a blog that talks about it and has lots of inside pictures of it as well. Then if you scroll to the bottom, they have a very in depth construction set of plans for sale that lists lumber, cuts, etc. Should be pretty easy.

Here is the blog: http://heatherbullard.typepad.com/heather_bullard_collectio/2010/03/our-chicken-coop.html

Lots more photos and the upside, it has storage built in for feed, etc. I'd show you MY coop... but from your responses of the others, I think mine will be way too large! But I do have a picture of a mini coop I'm building for my brother-- it's not finished yet, but it gives you the general idea. He lives in town and needs a small coop for 5 hens.

***I bought the window for $5 at Habitat's ReStore. Definitely check that place out for windows! Super cheap and you can find cute ones. Keep checking back if you don't find what you want, as they get in new stuff constantly.

I also built this little one--- (i need to get a current picture of it, because it's finished now) for a trio of silkies I have:

And if you have a deck on stilts, then this is an idea.... I built this too! (I'm a building fool around here) Anyway, I have a raised deck that is 6 feet tall, and I don't have to bend under there. I put a grow out pen for my chicks under the deck. This is it:

ETA (edited to add) I figured I'd go ahead and put on the picture of my large coop. You never know, it might spark an idea for you on a smaller scale.
