Hello new here and all. I just built my own coop and I have 2 RIR 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Wyandet, spelling is horrible. They are currently just about 3 weeks old. Got a good amount of feathers coming in now. I just finished the coop and run. Was thinking about insulation. Right now it’s getting to the point the lows at night will be 60’s and highs going into the 70-80’s soon. Do you bother to insulate during the summer and what should I use if anything for when it comes to winter

I live in upstate NY. We were sub-zero (many times in the -teens) for several nights. I do not insulate my coop. I have about 17 sq ft of ventilation that is kept open year round. It is from 2 pop doors, 2 gable vents, a ridge vent and soffit vents. During the summer, I have windows on all sides of the coop that are opened up to give another 28 sq ft.

The coop should be kept in shade when at all possible to keep it from heating up too much in the summer. Having lots of windows for cross ventilation helps them during warm summer nights.

Thank you, I just found a exhaust fans that plug in via USB in my basement, going to see about getting a solar kit thing so I can have it on to get better air circulation

I’m in Vermont, where are you located? I insulate, have good venting and use sweeter heaters over one of my roost bars. The birds can decide if they want the heat or not as there is another roost bar they can use without heat. It was -25 or so here. Anytime it was below 20 the birds snuggled right under the sweeter heaters lol. My coop usually stays about 20 degrees warmer than outdoors. But this past year was brutal.
