Here in west central Indiana, we're in the middle of a heat wave. Temp's are excess of 100 degrees with heat index of 112. Yesterday we lost 4 hens from heat , despite LOTS of water and shade. Does anyone have any recommendations to help my birds??? Was considering a fountain waterer, but haven't met anyone that uses them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.....thanks

I'm in SE Indiana and it's pretty darn hot here too.

Yesterday, I filled coffee cans with water and put them in the coop. I offered frozen berries for snacks and even some chilled melon. If you have a fan, you can use that too.

Sorry for your loss.

Is there any place that you can put fans so that they can blown on them.I have heard of people putting out milk jugs and those type of containers with ice in them. There is a post on BYC now that has an abundant of ideas on that subject.Take a look at that.Good luck.

Use empty milk jugs (rinsed well) and fill them with water and freezer them

Set them around the chicken yard for them to get close to and cool off.

I also stretched a "soaker hose" (used for flower beds) across the top of my runs and turned it on occasionally to provide a "mist"

Heat is awful.....wishing you the best
