Extreme heat issues

Texas here- freeze big bottles, bundt cake pans, etc and put those where your chickens lay & hang out. Also a shallow pan of water for them to cool their feet. That has definitely helped here in 110+ degrees. If they are panting put their feet in cool water and try to get their combs wet. I almost lost a hen but pulled her out of impending heat stroke but doing that. Good luck up north it is predicted to be unbearable hot.

Yes it was super hot! Thankfully all my girls were okay, now its at 65°F. Thanks for the tips! I already dunk then up to there necks.

I live in northern California where we have many days of 100 degree weather in the summer months. We have had backyard chickens for over 10 years and learned a lot the first couple of years after losing a few of our girls from the heat. Fortunately there is a small window in their coop and we put a small window air conditioner which was a little over $200 dollars to leave on in the hot evenings when the girls are panting from the heat. We also have a couple of misters set up in the yard when they can freely wander through the mist during the daytime. We haven't lost a hen from the heat since.

Im so sorry you lost hens in the past due to heat.
Im thinking about installing misters do you have a trusty brand?

We put a fan in their coop and another in their run. I also chopped up some fruit and put it in a plastic bowl with water and the froze it. It gave them a nice cool treat.

Thanks for the tip! I have a fan in mine as well but sometimes they nock it down.

I use kitty litter pans. I fill one with three inches and one with six inches of water (some girls like it shallow and some deep), place a PowerAde bottle of frozen water in the corner, and my girls will spend all day dipping in and out of it whenever they need to cool off. It is usually in the mid to sometimes upper 90's here in central Florida from about May through September so the girls enjoy their 'pool' quite a bit.

I found my girls also appreciated it when I took the hose and wet the dirt/sand in their favorite dust bathing spots. They would scratch down and set their breasts down in the damp soil where it was cool. Spraying the soil in the run with the hose will bring the temp of the run down a bit too.

Hey all.

Down here in North Jersy, the temps are getting up to 100 degrees F soon. Im struggling keeping there water cool at 85 degrees. Any tips on how to keep it cool? I put ice and frozen ice bottles in it while keeping it in the shade, but that does not seem to help. On top of that, how do I make sure my hens will be okay at 101 degrees F. If I keep them inside for a bit, wont that heat shock them? Where there coop and run is located its straight in the heat, some trees surround it but that doesn't do much.

I just saw a great suggestion. I'm going to try. Take a cheap cooler drill holes in the lower bottom then attach the waterers for the chickens in each hole. You can then put water and a bag of ice in the cooler. Water stays cold.

I take empty milk jugs with water and freeze them, then when it gets hot I take the jug and put it the 5 gallon bucket of water. If you have a smaller waterer try using a smaller jug or bottle filled with frozen water

We live in Arizona where the temps reach 115. We use a evaporative cooler, mist system and as a treat we give them crushed ice, Frozen watermelon ect. They also like walking in the mud. We lost one chicken and almost lost another. We don't want to, lose anymore.

Good Morning, along with the heat, we have to deal with the humidity in South Florida, is there a way that you can use a canopy or tarp over the run or coop to insulate it from the sun and have a fan wrapped with hardware cloth to protect the chickens and place it up (double secured) on a wall, or post, pointing airflow towards the floor and nesting boxes? amongst other things i do this time of year the fans are a "must have" for us, we use fresh well water from deep aquafer's underground in our water bins, even in the horse stalls, it tends to be cooler than regular tap water, I also use Kiddy pools, half filled, chickens go in they seem to enjoy when they get used to them, problem is the water gets soiled, which requires regular changing or topping off, my coops and runs are under a tree line of Lychee trees, i have this advantage.
