I have straight runs in Black Javas, Cochins, Black Australorps and Welsummers. Now, Wellies I have figured out because of the female widow's peak and Cleopatra eyeliner. What about the others? Some of our Java's have a bigger comb than others and the same is true of the Australorps. Can I make any determination according to that at four weeks or is it just too early to tell? Do roos combs grow bigger faster or is that just a myth? Physically, some Javas are bigger than others. Is that any sort of indication?

My cochins all look alike except for coloration. *sigh* I wish I knew who is who.

What sort of photographs are helpful? Some people post head shots, others show the chick's back. What angle is most helpful in identification of gender?

What age, short of "cock-a-doodle-doo," will I know??????

Thanks!

Okay, maybe I need to add some pictures. Here you go. Aren't they pretty?????

Here's one of my black javas with one of the bigger combs.

Here's one with a smaller comb.

The one in the background has a bigger and redder comb than the ones in the foreground. Does that mean anything?

As for my cochins, I just can't tell. Maybe you can.

Maybe it's just too early, or maybe I just love showing off my chicks. But if anyone can give me some pointers to watch for, I'd really REALLY appreciate it.

Thank you for answering my post. I've been having so much fun watching them grow, it's nice to have some idea of who I'm raising up.
