Italian eggs. A box of 10, it says they are raised outdoors and in the fine print it says they have a minimum of 4 sq. meters (about 40 square feet) per bird. They were on sale in an Italian supermarket for 1.99 euro (currently about $2.26). The regular price on free range and organic eggs in that store was much higher, between $2.50 and $5.00 per 10 eggs. They are also sold in boxes of 4 eggs.

On sale, but they weren't a short date. It said on the box it is "preferred" to consume them on a stamped date, that date being 3 weeks from the date that I saw them in the store.

These are extra large brown eggs, and they haven't yet been washed. That would never happen in the US, but I think Italian customers are much more educated on food quality issues. They will understand the freshness advantage to unwashed eggs and can be trusted to wash the eggs themselves.
