I bought this grill for frying meat on skewers in 1998. This summer a hole appeared in it. The bottom has actually rotted away.

I decided to get it into working order. I took two steel corners and welded them, after which I filled the bottom with different metals.

I think it will serve me well for another couple of years. After this, i will probably have to replace the entire top. welding a new iron box.

I decided not to break out the old metal of the bottom, but left it. Subsequently, it will simply turn into dust.
It is customary here to burn charcoal in such boxes and fry meat and onions on this coal.

The box is slightly deformed, but the side walls are still quite strong.

Wish I knew how to weld. That's looks like a good repair job.

You are quite resourceful.

Well, usually an inexpensive welding transformer or inverter is enough for such things. If the electrodes are not thick (and thick ones are not needed for such work), then the welding current is small and the electricity will hardly flicker. The main thing is to choose a mask with dark enough glass so as not to damage your eyes.
My late grandfather had a neighbor who became blind from electric welding. But he welded a lot, firstly, he worked as a welder at a factory for more than 40 years, and even when he retired, he kept welding and welding something. The plant gave him paid leave so that he could rest, quietly working in the garden among the apples and cucumbers, but he got a welding machine somewhere to take home and began welding there all day long.
All the neighbors in the area began to come to him with various problems, and he happily welded. Either some kind of water pipes (in the Soviet Union, old water pipes were made of welded pipes), then garden gates, then wheelbarrows, or old bicycles.
As a result, after about 50 years of endless welding work, he became completely blind. When my grandfather became seriously and mortally ill, I came to take care of him, met this neighbor on the road and discovered that he was completely blind. Somehow, from memory, he went with a stick to the village store and bought food for his retirement.
I personally rarely weld, unlike him, only when I need something, and my mask has a very thick, very dark glass, through which even if you look at the sun, you can’t see it very well)) I try to protect my eyes )
Unfortunately, this has a drawback - the quality of the skill after each break noticeably decreases. When I weld a lot and for a long time, I start welding like a professional, but if I haven’t welded for a year and start doing it, the electrode first sticks and I make crooked seams.
And the welding machine here costs approximately 15000 ru (161$). Therefore, now everyone is welding, some are fences, some are primitive old bicycles.
Having a welding machine in the house is convenient because sometimes you can weld quite decent things from outright garbage.
