in this random rambling thread we post random pictures

I've kinda taken your advice and have started watermarking my pics and have made a FB page. ("Larksong Photography," in my signature.) I'll go with that for now. In the future I might start my own site, but not right away. :)
There are all sorts of custom apps and plugins for watermarking, but I just make a file, save it in a format that preserves layers (for photoshop, use .psd, for photopaint, .cpt, other apps have their native formats). Then I copy it, paste it on the photo, position it and use the object transparency slider to determine how strong it appears.

Here I've applied different degrees of transparency to the watermark. The watermark itself is just text, but then I used the "emboss" filter to create the stamped in 3d effect.

After I set up the watermark file, it only takes a few seconds to watermark a photo.
Remember, however, to understand file formats. JPG is a "lossy" format- it reduces file size though "lossy" compression, meaning each time you save it it loses some data and quality. So if you save a jpg, edit it, and save it again, the quality will deteriorate more with each save. Therefore, do three things:
  1. Save your original photo as an archive, don't touch it.
  2. Edit and save in a "lossless" format, a format that retains the quality; I use .tif, but .psd and others are good too.
  3. When everything is finished, just save it once as a jpg for the copy you upload. If you want to make changes, go back to the tif, edit that, and make the new jpg from that (and also save a second version of that modified tif if you want).
