"Today marks the birthday of American photographer Dorothea Lange. Her photograph of Florence Owens Thompson, a Cherokee woman sitting outside a pea-picker's camp with 3 of her 7 kids, became one of the most iconic images of the Great Depression.

At the time Lange captured "Migrant Mother" she was working for the Federal Government's Resettlement Administration, so the photo passed to the public domain. In 1998, the image became a 32-cent U.S. Postal Service stamp. This was quite unusual since daughters Katherine McIntosh and Norma Rydlewski (depicted) were alive at the time of printing.

While Florence never got any royalties for the image, three prints auctioned at Sotheby's and Christie's fetched around $700,000 combined. "

"Researchers from the National Institutes of Health have performed the first study of human fungal skin diversity, using DNA sequencing techniques optimized foridentifying fungi to analyze samples taken at 14 body sites from 10 healthy adults. The sequencing efforts generated more than 5 million markers, from the samples, representing more than 80 fungal types. Some highlights include:
• The most common genus Malassezia was present in 11 of 14 sites
• The heel is the most complex site, with about 80 genus-level types of fungi
• Head and trunk body sites (including back, back of neck, inside of ears, behind ears, between eyebrows) have the fewest fungi types, with just 2 to 10 genera each
• While arms have high measures of bacterial diversity, they have lower fungal diversity

"I'm not going to take my daughter's fierceness personally. My mom took all my behavior personally, and thought it was rebellion against her. It was just me being me. I want to remember this with my daughter. It's not about me."~Pink
