The number of cars without it in them is far below the number that do. Its one of the lightest, strongest an cheapest options they have. VW used it in its air cooled engines from the 1940 till a few years a go. Chainsaw engines are made of it to. The big 3 still use it a lot in structural parts an some engine parts.

Its usually harmless cause its an alloy an usually oxidized. In a crash or fire the pure metal can be exposed an that explodes when it contacts water. I saw it happen 4 or 5 times in 13 years as a firemen. Lots of sparks but nothing hurt other that firemens boxer shorts.
