This would be an interesting conversation to have but a lot of it may come across as encouraging people to drink. With the wide age group we have on here I dont want to sound like I am doing that. I will stick to the science an history of it.Reb why would anyone want to drink booze if the good stuff really tastes BAD? Just for the instant loss of morals etc? Why ingest anything that tastes Bad (broccoli included)
Bad taste is a warning that you shouldn't partake. Good taste, like malteds, milk shakes means you should fill-r-up.
My parents didn't drink ,my mother considered beer, wine, anything with alcohol in it to be booze. My peers tried to appeal to me with drinks like Grasshoppers, etc. I said why would I need alcohol to in it. Sorry but, I just don't. I can generate my own highs and lows, I don't need supplements.
I'm not a goody, goody, I also never smoked and never wanted too. Second hand smoke always made me cough, get hoarse and my eyes tear. Why would I want to bring that on myself? I did have relatives that smoked, I just tried to keep away while they did.
If people want to that is there business.
Running a still takes skill. Making something that is 20 or 30% is easy an it still tastes like what ever it was made out of or can be put in barrels to take on the flavor of the wood. Making something stronger takes a lot more skill but strong means removing any good taste an replacing it with fire. Because more impurities have been removed you are getting more for your money an when you add it to a drink you like it takes less an puts less off flavors in to the drink. Thats why I say the good stuff tastes bad. Its better made, more for your money an you can do more with it but it, its self tastes bad.
All of that is referred to as booze. Wine was not called booze cause everyone drank wine. Dr. Welch's Unfermented Wine (now Welches grape juice) came out in 1869 right after he invented pasteurization. Before that everyone drank wine even in church. So calling what they drank in church as booze would have been odd.
