That would be a hard picture to catch. Manual focus on thin air. Fast shutter speed to stop the motion. Low F stop to make up for the fast shutter so the depth of field is very shallow. That would make the distance the ball was in focus just a few inches. Then timing the shutter press for when the ball is that exact distance from the camera. I bet they took a lot of pictures to get that one right.

This appears to be the photographer who took the baseball shot. He is good. I don't think he used fishing line, I think it's the real thing.
