They do grow bigger here , need more body fat to stay warmerIt looks big in the pic.![]()
Try different types of nipples, i have not found one yet that doesn't learn.I was forced to change my policy in the barn. I am doing something wrong. The fact is that the herd lives together, the room is not cramped, but they often crowd. The elders walk, absolutely not looking under their feet, lie where they want, and this led to the fact that one adult goat accidentally lay down on a very small goat and strangled him (!). At one time I tried to make places where kids could hide and sleep safely, but they often come out and go to bed anywhere where adults can accidentally step on them. I thought about it and decided to take the kids and grow them on my own to a size where their presence in the barn would not be dangerous.
It's hard to say if it would be worth giving the pregnant goats separate rooms, but it would add a lot of feeding and maintenance work. In general, I decided to keep the little kids separately in another paddock, and feed them there, using special feeders and buckets with nipples.
In the meantime... While I don't have this pen, I just took the new kids to my bedroom. It's warm there, and it's convenient for me to feed them there.
But I can't teach them to suck from a nipple, and I have them drink from a regular glass, which I hold so that the milk does not flow too quickly and they do not choke. As I understand it, calves cannot do this if they swallow a lot - there is a risk of dangerous problems with a young stomach, but goats do not seem to have this, they drink and do not get sick. The photo is a little old, now they have grown up.
Their mother is quite alive, but I go to milk her. This added work, but I don't have any other ideas yet.
Sure can!Can anyone "smell" this?
