in this random rambling thread we post random pictures

A friend is in Bangkok on vacation, and just e-mailed me this photo of a Thai chicken.
Anyone know the breed?

It's what is popularly known as 'gai ban', 'Gai' = chicken, 'ban' = home.

Gai ban roam free and interbreed with whatever chicken passes by so there's probably no particular breed. However, the hens are usually very dark in colour and the cocks are as you might expect, more colourful. They forage for what they can find and are given rice and other food scraps. The meat is tastier and more expensive than the factory produced chickens. The latter are mainly for export.

Gai ban provide a main source of meat and eggs for village people here and a small income for some. They're easy to keep, taking care of themselves except for the occasional handout.

You might be interested to know that there are no restrictions here on keeping poultry or on the sale of their meat and eggs. I know of no incidents of food poisoning resulting from gai ban produce.

There are other varieties. Road Islands are kept in coops for eggs. We have some banties and goslings that stay within our boundaries. Turkeys are becoming popular.
