Watched some young kids using a vending machine sort of like this today. I was a bit dumbfounded to see the machine owner carefully explain how they should insert the two dimes in the slot, pointed out where the slot was, and then explain to them how they had to pull the rod out firmly in a single strong motion. I realized it isn't intuitive to kids any more; they had never seen anything like that machine.

(at their age we had the scavenged inner workings from a bunch of coin machines, retrieved from a burned out warehouse, and we were reverse engineering them to figure how to bypass the security. By that time they had lots of built in anti-hacking tricks, like little razors or scissors that came across behind the coin and cut the thread, in case you had drilled a hole in a dime and tied a string so you could drop it in, trigger the mechanism, and then pull your dime back out).
