Inaccurate Incubator Thermometer Leads to Very Lengthy Temp Spike

This one is just an indoor one, about the size of a large post-it note, the sensor is right below the display. I have one of the large ones with the indoor/outdoor thing, but i haven't used it in my incubator before.
I am attempting a modified dry hatch, where the humidity is kept at 35-40%. I have had many hatches that drowned, suspecting it is because we are in such a humid location as it is, and it has rained almost the entire spring. I'll let you all know the results of the hatch, they are due to start hatching this Friday.

The humidity in my incubator started out around 25% for about the first week and then dropped off to 16% for the rest of the duration. I bumped it up to 60% at lockdown and so far they've done okay.

I'm just throwing this out there for you or anyone else that may not know this but if you use a digital thermometer/hygrometer combo, it must have the capability of displaying both indoor and outdoor humidity. If it's indoor only, it's reading the humidity in the room where the incubator is because the sensor is in the display unit. If it reads both indoor and outdoor humidity, the sensors are in both the display unit and the part you put outside (or in the incubator). I paid $25 for the one I got at Orscheln's and it's done a great job so far. This is my first hatch and so far I have 7 out of 12 eggs hatched. I'm hoping for 100% but I know that's highly unlikely.

the one I just got came from incubator warehouse, its digital, has the temp and humidity, its about the size of a pack of cigs and I have it sitting on the little shelf where my water bowl sits, is this gonna be ok, its reads nothing outside the incubator...Roost

It has to have the ability to read both inside and outside humidity as well as temperature. The ones that read indoor humidity and temp only have the sensor in the display unit. The ones that read both have a separate sensor that goes outside but just because it has a separate sensor doesn't mean it will read outdoor humidity. It has to say that it reads both because there are units that display indoor temp and humidity but only outdoor temp. I hope this all makes sense. Just be sure it says that it will read BOTH!

hurder, I don't get it, why is outside humidity so important, I thought the humidity inside the box was what we"re after, and why would incubator warehouse even sell this thing if its not what we need, its been staying from 49 to 53 though if its accurate

If you have a set up that reads both temp and humidity with just one piece and you put the whole thing in the incubator then you're fine as long as you can see it. If you have one that is 2 pieces and measures outdoor and indoor temperature but only indoor humidity, the sensors are located in the part that stays in your house so it's measuring indoor humidity while the remote part that's hanging outside somewhere is measuring outdoor temps.

Now suppose that the outdoors is instead your incubator and you put the remote piece inside the incubator and the second piece is what displays the temp and humidity. The only way that the remote piece can measure the humidity in your incubator is if it ALSO has a humidity sensor built in. If your setup is a 2 piece set up but only measures indoor humidity, then the sensor is located in the display and not the remote so it reads the humidity in your home and not the incubator.

Mine is made by Accu-Rite and it measures both indoor and outdoor humidity so when I put the remote part in the incubator, it's reading the humidity in the incubator. If I had purchase one that reads both indoor and outdoor temp but only indoor humidity, then the remote in the incubator doesn't have the humidity sensor in it but does have a sensor in the display unit so it's measuring humidity in your home.

I know it's kind of confusing but think about it. The best thing to do is, if your set up has 2 pieces, one that goes in the house to display the indoor and outdoor temp but doesn't not read both indoor and outdoor humidity, then you're not getting an accurate reading.
