I have three one week old chicks. One of them always has a packed crop. Literally three times (at least) the size of the other two chicks. When I feel it is is firm but not hard...kind of feels like clay. She is bright and alert, active, eating and drinking normally. I did see her poop once yesterday, but I honestly don't know how much she is pooping. I have read other threads here saying to check it first thing in the morning, but they are always up and already eating when I get up. It just feels so much different than the other chicks that its got me worried. Should I be worried about an impacted crop in a chick this young? Or is it normal for them to be so full and feel like thick clay? These are my first chicks and I don't know if I'm just being overrly paranoid. Any advice would be much appreciated!

If you're really worried about it, bite the bullet and get up before they do to check her crop. You can always go back to bed and will probably sleep better knowing if she is alright or not.

Maybe take the food away about 10-11 PM ish and give it back after you get up at 5? I would think a few hours wouldn't hurt anything for the other two.

I can try that. I was afraid to withhold food from them since they are so young, but I guess if they are sleeping they are not eating anyway. If her crop is still full what do I do? I know at least some food is getting thru since I did see her poop.
