I know this will probably not work, but i bought some cage free eggs from Target to test out my new incubator, the little-giant model, and i was wondering if anyone had ever hatched store bought eggs before. I'm not expecting this to work, just wanted to get a feel for the incubator for once my hens start laying.

If there's a Trader Joe's market in your neck of the woods, go there..... they sell fertilized egg meant for consuming, but some folks have actually hatched out chicks with them. Just look for the eggs that says, 'fertilized' on the carton.

Don't know if there are any Asian markets in your location but if there are then that would be your best shot at finding fertile eggs...they call them Balut eggs.

Of course, buy the freshest "fertilized" eggs from trader Joes or similar you can find. The longer they are refrigerated and the older they are, the less likely to get a chick to hatch. So, look at all the cartons for date, and even ask an employee when they receive their "fertilized" eggs, and/or if they have some more (fresher) ones in the back. Cant hurt to try!

Nice to know @Shamo Hybrid - I do not have a trader Joes near me, nor an asian market, and when I've been to either, I've never looked at the eggs! But, for sure, any lower cost eggs would come from a large facility and would not be fertilized (like the Target eggs mentioned). It is also possible that going to a small market in smaller population center might get their eggs from a local farm or two and those may also be fertilized, just probably not labelled as such. I know that one small convenience store/market near me buys their eggs from a local special needs teen/young adult who raises chickens to sell the eggs, and would guess that those are potentially fertilized.
