Lately I have had several eggs hatch earlier than I had expected and so the eggs never were put on their sides in the hatcher. This was occurring because we kept taking clutches of eggs away from the hen(s) and they apparently had already started to incubate. Anyway, these little guys have just popped out of the eggs and I was wondering if anyone else has ever hatched eggs without putting them on their sides the last three days? Where did the concept of putting the eggs on their side towards the end come from? I haven't had one chick that drowned in the shell or whatever else happens when they start to pip and then just don't finish.

It's more likely chicks drown in the shell when the humidity is way off the charts - I've not heard it was due to position.

Glad you joined us! Chicks drown in the shell due to malpositions and moisture in the air cell due to too high humidity. I prefer to lay eggs in their side for hatching because it's more natural and I'm sure it makes things easier for the chicks too.

Welcome to BYC! You've received some good advice on egg incubation. I'm glad you chicks were able to hatch okay. What breed of chicks are you hatching?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Lots of people hatch eggs in egg cartons, large end up to help prevent drowning. But I personally think drowning comes from too much humidity or the chick not being in the right position inside the egg, and not the position of the egg itself. I prefer the natural positioning of laying the egg on it's side.

Good luck with your hatches and welcome to our flock!
