Wilberforce, Ontario.
I would like to start incubating my eggs. From the time they are laid until they reach the incubator, how long a time frame do I have? And at what temperature must they remain. My coop is not maintained with heat an the temperatures in there have reached -21 celsius (-6 F). Can I retrieve these eggs for incubation or would I have to warm the coop first? The coop is wired for heat, I just choose not to.

Collect the eggs at multiple times during the day so that they do not become overly chilled. Store at moderate temperature and humidity turning several times daily. Most people recommend holding eggs no longer than 10 days - I have had success holding them somewhat longer prior to incubation. Good luck with your incubation.

Eggs can be successfully stored for up to 14 days before setting them in the incubator. Past that, and hatchability/fertility will drop. A shorter time is better, but many breeders wait for 14 days before setting eggs, because they don't have a lot of birds laying. Keep the stored eggs at 50-60 degrees before setting for best results. A cool, damp cellar or basement is ideal.

Ideally, you want to keep the eggs from freezing. You should collect eggs several times daily to prevent that from happening (though you could also heat the coop).

The other posters have already given you some great advice. Good luck with any future incubating! There is nothing better than watching chicks hatch from eggs that you've carefully collected and incubated.
